This vintage rug is a fully handwoven Turkish rug, and a piece this large was the biggest thing an Anatolian woman ever made with her own hands. She sat at the loom through winters, tying knot after knot, and the pattern she followed came from memory and from her mother before her — octagonal blossoms for abundance, hooked arms for protection, small cypress trees along the border for a long and peaceful life. Every knot here is the traditional Ghiordes double knot, wrapped twice around the warp and pulled tight, which is exactly why this rug is still one flat, sound, usable piece after all these decades. Hand knotted wool of this construction does not tire; it thins gracefully and keeps holding together. The rug has been professionally washed, is completely clean, dry and odour free, and can be unrolled and walked on the very day it reaches you — no airing out, no treatment, nothing to do but enjoy it.
