This vintage rug is fully hand-woven, tied knot by knot on an upright village loom by Anatolian women who wove in the company of each other, turning their patience, their prayers and their hopes for the household directly into wool. Both star medallions on this Turkish runner rug were formed entirely by hand with the traditional Ghiordes double knot, the technique that gives Anatolian carpets their reputation for strength. Because the double knot wraps the wool around two warp threads rather than one, each fiber is locked into the foundation and cannot shed, creep or work loose underfoot. This is exactly why a hand-knotted wool runner keeps its density and its straight lines through decades of daily walking, while machine-made rugs flatten and thin out within a few years. The wool was hand-spun from local sheep and colored with traditional natural dye methods, so the tones have mellowed slowly and evenly.
